As September turns to October, communities throughout South Orange County come alive with pumpkin patches, harvest festivals, Halloween celebrations, outdoor movies, local craft fairs and plenty of creative ways to enjoy the season.
Whether you're looking for a family-friendly weekend activity, a festive date night or simply an excuse to get out and enjoy the communities we call home, fall is a wonderful time to explore South Orange County. Here are some of the unique happenings worth putting on your calendar for fall 2026.
🎃 Pick Your Perfect Pumpkin at Pumpkin City in Laguna Hills

One of the classic South Orange County fall traditions returns October 1–31 at Pumpkin City's Pumpkin Farm in Laguna Hills.
Located behind Trader Joe's at Laguna Hills Mall, Pumpkin City is much more than a place to grab a pumpkin. The seasonal attraction features pumpkins, kid-friendly rides, games, a petting zoo, gem mining, live entertainment, seasonal food and plenty of fall photo opportunities. There's even an Oktoberfest-themed beer garden for the adults.
The farm is open throughout October, with extended hours Friday through Sunday. Admission is free Monday through Friday before 4 p.m., while regular admission and individual activity tickets are available for those who want to enjoy the attractions.

🍂 Shop Local at the Laguna Niguel Fall Boutique & Crafts Faire
If your idea of fall fun involves shopping for something unique rather than battling a haunted house, head to Crown Valley Community Center on Saturday, October 3.
The City of Laguna Niguel's Fall Boutique & Crafts Faire features handcrafted items, home décor, jewelry, gifts and other one-of-a-kind finds. The event also includes entertainment in the Crown Valley Park Amphitheater, making it an easy way to spend part of a Saturday morning exploring local vendors.

🏊 Go Pumpkin Diving in Mission Viejo
Looking for a fall tradition that is decidedly not your typical pumpkin patch?
Mission Viejo's annual Pumpkin Dive turns the swimming pool at Montanoso Recreation Center into a floating pumpkin patch.
On October 3, families can jump into the pool and pick out a pumpkin before decorating it and enjoying carnival games and other activities. An earlier session is also available for ABLE participants seeking a lower-sensory experience.
It's one of those uniquely Southern California fall activities: pumpkins, swimming pools and October sunshine all at once.

👻 Get Your Skate On at Laguna Niguel's Haunted Skate Contest
For something a little more unconventional, Laguna Niguel's Skate and Soccer Park is getting into the Halloween spirit on October 10.
The Haunted Skate Contest combines skateboarding with Halloween festivities, including best-trick contests, a costume contest, giveaways, food and refreshments. Participants are encouraged to come dressed in costume, so don't be surprised to see some creatively dressed skaters showing off their best moves.

🐾 Meet Some Furry Friends at Mission Viejo's Fall Fest
Fall and animals make for a pretty great combination, and Mission Viejo Animal Services offers an especially fun option for families.
The city's Fur-Ever Friends Fall Fest combines fall activities with an opportunity to meet adoptable animals. Previous event programming has included rescue organizations, dogs, cats, bunnies and reptiles, along with children's crafts, wildlife education and animal meet-and-greets.
For animal lovers, it's a nice reminder that community events can be about more than just Halloween candy and costumes.
🧙♀️ Take a Walk Through Haunted Trails in Laguna Niguel
If you're looking for something a little scarier, Crown Valley Park will transform into the setting for Haunted Trails October 22–25.
The multi-night event gives local residents an opportunity to enjoy a Halloween attraction close to home rather than making the drive to a major theme park. The city has scheduled evening sessions throughout the weekend.

🌊 Experience "Spooky Seas" at the Ocean Institute
Halloween meets the ocean at Dana Point's Spooky Seas on October 24.
Hosted at the Ocean Institute, this family-friendly Halloween event brings a maritime twist to the season. Activities are scheduled to include a mad scientist laboratory, bioluminescence laser tag, costume festivities, food and other Halloween-themed entertainment.
It's particularly fitting for Dana Point, where the community's connection to the ocean is part of what makes the area so distinctive.

🚓 Bring the Kids to Dana Point's Halloween Spooktacular & Trunk or Treat
Also on October 24, Dana Point will host its annual Halloween Spooktacular & Trunk or Treat at the Dana Point Community Center.
The event includes Halloween-themed games, crafts, entertainment and a Trunk or Treat experience featuring Dana Point Police Services. Families can also check out police vehicles and specialized units, with a children's costume parade among the festivities.

It's a great example of the kind of community-oriented programming that makes South Orange County neighborhoods particularly appealing to families.
🏡 Get Inspired by Mission Viejo's Halloween Home Decorating Contest
Here's one you don't even have to leave your neighborhood to enjoy.
The City of Mission Viejo is holding its sixth annual Halloween and Fall Home Decorating Contest, inviting residents to transform their homes with spooky Halloween décor or autumn harvest themes.
Categories include Best Theme, Best Special Effects, Scariest, Most Creative and Pumpkin-Tastic. Entries are due by October 9, with judging taking place later in the month.
Even if you're not entering, this is a fun excuse to take an evening drive through Mission Viejo neighborhoods and see some of the creative displays.
🎃 Celebrate Fall at Rancho Santa Margarita's Halloween Family Festival
Rancho Santa Margarita is also going all-in on Halloween with its Halloween Family Festival at Central Park on October 30.
The event is designed as a full evening of family entertainment, with trick-or-treating, inflatables, games, music, pumpkin decorating, a petting zoo, face painting, festive photo opportunities, food trucks and costume contests.
It's the kind of event where families can make an entire evening out of the celebration rather than simply stopping by for candy.

🕯️ Experience Día de los Muertos in San Juan Capistrano
For something that goes beyond the traditional Halloween celebration, San Juan Capistrano offers an opportunity to experience the cultural traditions surrounding Día de los Muertos.
At Mission San Juan Capistrano, a Día de los Muertos altar will be on display from October 1 through November 2, creating a particularly meaningful seasonal experience in one of Orange County's most historic settings.
San Juan Capistrano will also host its Food & Wine Festival on October 10, giving visitors another opportunity to enjoy the historic Mission and surrounding community during the fall season.
